Hello.

Hello Amir, welcome to Romani Wikipedia and thanks for the kind congratulations (me, wishing all the best also for the Hebrew one). As you can see the wiki is at the beginnings and there are still some things to do to make it functional.

If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask me. Desiphral 28 April 2006 14:24 (UTC)

Re: Romanian[modificare sursă]

Hi! If you came earlier, you could find much more Romanian in the interface, since it was choosed as the variant from which to translate in Romani. And you will find less and less, according as the translation in Romani goes on. Also in the talk page you may find Romanian, since I'm working with Romanian persons who help me to begin this wiki. But the articles are only in Romani. Desiphral 9 May 2006 12:44 (UTC)

Nice. Is it because the names are similar or because many Roma people know Romanian? Or both?
Also - why is Devanagari used here? Does anyone write Romani with Devanagari? I thought that only Latin and Cyrillic are used, but i never saw Devanagari.--Amire80 9 May 2006 13:16 (UTC)
Me and another Romani contributor live in Romania and also some non-Roma from Romania helped us to start the wiki, maybe that's why the Romanian interface was choosed as a start. As for Devanagari, I gave earlier an answer to somebody here. Desiphral 9 May 2006 14:06 (UTC)
Copying it here in case the anonymous talk page gets deleted someday:

Hi!

This wiki is in generic, standardized Romani. Some fact about it you find in the article Romani ćhib or in English here. It is not the Vlax Romani dialect; a small example would be that the name of the language is pronounced in the Vlax dialects Romani shib.

As for the Devanagari script, it has a degree of use less than the Latin. At the beginning, the main ways to acquire and to desire to use it were in the process of studying the Romani in the Indo-Aryan context, also through the adding in the standardized form of neologisms from the Indo-Aryan languages, mainly Hindi and when studying the cultural similarities between the Desi/South Asian people and Roma. As for the formal use of Devanagari, by now there are two opinions: those who think that its use would make problems in Europe (that it could target us as aliens) and those who think that it is worthy to write like this because it is the most fitting writing system for a Indo-Aryan language, it is the way our ancestors wrote. In this wiki there are allowed to be used all the variants of Latin alphabet used for the Romani, see Romano lekhipen, when there will be more users we will have a debate about the variant to be mainly used. Desiphral 5 May 2006 21:08 (UTC)
