Turkish Roma[modificare sursă]

The Turkish speaking Muslim Roma are the biggest Subgroup of the Xoraxane-Roma (Muslim-Roma). They see themself as Turks, also in official census they decleared to be Turks instead of Roma, and do not recognize themself to the Roma identity. They speak Turkish as first Language. They are cultural sunni muslims of hanafi madhab and mixed old Roma-mythology with Islam. Some say they are from Egypt other say they are from India. A special case are the Turkish Sufi Roma Group from Selamsiz in Üsküdar, this Group is named Tekkekapılı, who once came from Bulgaria, they claimed to be descendants of the Indian Derwishes (Hindiler) who came from India at the 13-15 century to Ottoman Empire and established there Sufi Lodges. In Üsküdar at Selamsiz they made there own Sufi-lodge, the so called Gulsheni-Sezai Order. Indeed at 1581 in Sofia (then Ottoman Empire), this Indian Derwishes established a Sufi Lodge, also in Prizren. More and more Turkish speaking Muslim Roma decleared to be descendants of Indian Dervishes and Bahmani Merchants who came from Hindustan to Ottoman empire. In Bursa at 1476 Bahmani merchants are settled, in 1481 at the Balkans too. In 1455 in Istanbul established the Horhor Tekke by Indian Dervishes. T

The Turkish Roma people live mainly in Turkey, but also turkish roma minoritys live in Greece (Western Thrace), Bulgaria and Romania (Dobruja), Northern Cyprus, in Kosovo (Prishtina) and in North-Mecodnia (Skoplje, Kocani, Stip, and Veles). Some of the Turks who came in the 1970's to Germany as Gustworker have Roma Background, in later times since 2007 Turkish Roma Men came from Bulgaria to west european countrys too. Some of this Turksh Gustworker with Roma Background married German/Austrian woman, and Turkish Roma Men from Bulgaria married Polish woman. All Turkish Roma Men are circumcised, the circumcision ceremony of boys is hold in great manner. An uncirumcised Man is seen as unclean and unpure.

They didnt speak Romani chib, because they see this language as a remnant of the Jahiliyyah-time (the pre-Islamic period). They have no such thing as Romanipen, they adopted the turkish culture and mentality. The Turkish Roma are of very mixed Ancestry of other ethnicity who live in the former ottoman empire. Many of the Turkish Roma was expelled in 1923 from Greece and Crete to Turkey. Also from other countrys like Bulgaria, Romania, Ex-Yugoslavia Cyprus, many Muslim Roma came to Turkey.


Official in Turkey, there names is Roman (singular), Romanlar (plural) and they are Turkish citizenship and not a minority because of Muslim faith.

They are also named in different Languages as: Çingene, Turkish- Roma, Turkos Romanos, Tirkitiko Romiti, Turko-Romano, Turkish Romani, Turko-Romani, Türkische Roma, Turkoromanen, Turkish Gypsy, Turkos Tsiganos, Turski Tsigani (турски цигани), Tourkogifti (τουρκο-γύφτοι), Țigani-turci, Török-Cigányok, Gitano Turkos, Turci- Cigani, Türk-Çingeneler, Chingene, Tschingene, Şopar, Šopar, Roman kökenli Türk (Turks of Romani background) etc...but also named after there old professions or the quarters where they live in.

Then there are the Dom people, Domlar (plural), Dom (singular) who speak Domani in Turkey who claim there Ancestors once came from Mesopotamia. Then there is the Lom people, (Lomlar (plurar), Lom (Singular), who speak Lomani also often named Posalar, they claimed to be related with the Ahiska- Turks. Then there is the Abdals (plurarl, Abdal (singular), who said they are Turkmens.
